Bi-interpretation in weak set theories.Alfredo Roque Freire & Joel David Hamkins - 2021 - Journal of Symbolic Logic 86 (2):609-634.
In contrast to the robust mutual interpretability phenomenon in set theory, Ali Enayat proved that bi-interpretation is absent: distinct theories extending ZF are never bi-interpretable and models of ZF are bi-interpretable only when they are isomorphic. Nevertheless, for natural weaker set theories, we prove, including Zermelo–Fraenkel set theory $\mathrm {ZFC}^{-}$ without power set and Zermelo set theory Z, there are nontrivial instances of bi-interpretation. Specifically, there are well-founded models of $\mathrm {ZFC}^{-}$ that are bi-interpretable, but not isomorphic—even $\langle H_{\omega _1},\in (...)

    Mapping Population Dynamics at Local Scales Using Spatial Networks.José Balsa-Barreiro, Alfredo J. Morales & Rubén C. Lois-González - 2021 - Complexity 2021:1-14.
Nowadays, around half of the global population lives in urban areas. This rate is expected to increase up to two-thirds by the year 2050. Most studies analyze urban dynamics in wide geographic ranges, focusing mainly on cities. According to them, the global population is spatially distributed in two extremes: large urban agglomerations and rural deserts. However, this remark is excessively general and imprecise. For this reason, it remains essential to analyze these dynamics at other spatial scales. A close-up look in (...)

    A Holistically Deweyan Feminism.Jane Duran - 2001 - Metaphilosophy 32 (3):279-292.
The argument that a holistic analysis of Dewey's work, drawing not only on the major portions subject to extensive commentary (such as Experience and Nature) but also on his aesthetics, provides fuel for feminist theorizing is sustained by advertence to the standard commentary and also to new work in aesthetic feminism itself. Sleeper, Rorty, Hickman and Russell are cited, and the recent resurgence of interest in developing the intersection between analytic aesthetics and feminist aesthetics is alluded to. It is concluded (...)

Definition of Economics in Retrospective: Two Epistemological Tensions That Explain the Change of the Study Object in Economics.Daniel Durán-Sandoval & Francesca Uleri - 2023 - Philosophies 9 (1):1.
Throughout history, schools of economic thought have defined political economy—or economics—and its object of study in multiple ways. This paper reflects on the definitions of economics by schools of economic thought and also proposes the concepts of value and scarcity as key concepts to explain the differences between them. The most important findings of the paper are: (a) the ontological and epistemological characteristics of the concept of value and scarcity have shaped the definitions of economics; (b) the boundaries of the (...)

Pacari Brand Engagement and its Emotional Connection in Ethical Consumption.Edmundo Guillermo Córdova Duran, Ana del Rocío Cornejo Mayorga, Mayra Alexandra Samaniego Arias, Ariel Omar Cruz Oña, Giovanni David Alejandro Salazar & Erick Stalin Pazmiño Peñafiel - 2023 - Human Review. International Humanities Review / Revista Internacional de Humanidades 21 (1):135-145.
The paper analyzes the factors that brand engagement produces in the growth of a brand, studying the values of creating emotional bonds to retain customers and develop consumer cultures. The PACARI brand is taken as a reference, which has international recognition, managing to position Ecuador as the country where the best chocolate in the world originates. The objective is to analyze the impact of PACARI and its connection in ethical consumption, where the brand has generated impact from the word of (...)

On the toponymics of the Great Palace of Constantinople: the Daphne.Alfredo Calahorra Bartolomé - 2022 - Byzantinische Zeitschrift 115 (1):1-46.
The Great Palace of Constantinople has been subject to several investigations since the second half of the nineteenth century. All of them have been mostly concerned with the topographical, architectural and typological development of the imperial residence, leaving aside questions such as toponymics. This paper will deal with this issue taking into consideration the name of the complex of buildings that once was the core of the Constantinian Palace, the Daphne. Doing so, we will better understand the denomination of the (...)

Three of Patricia Williams’s essays in The Rooster’s Egg are examined for their relevance to contemporary issues, and for the style in which they are written. It is concluded that Williams does an admirable job, despite writing in a vein that might be thought to be somewhat less than jurisprudential.

    Boydian Nightmares.Jane Duran - 1991 - Dialectica 45 (4):289-299.
SummaryIn the debate between the realists and the instrumentalists, the importance of theory of reference in the realist account has frequently been overlooked. Taking Boyd's account as paradigmatic, I argue that the peculiarly stringent referential view which is invoked by his rigorous realism is not consonant with the history of science and actually does damage to a realist view. Ellis', Glymour's and Van Fraassen's work is also cited, and some interesting material by Wolff on the actual form of Copernican arguments (...)

    Coastal Conservation.Jane Duran - 2017 - Environmental Ethics 39 (4):437-446.
There are two major reasons for holding that coastal conservation is of paramount importance. The first is that our intuitive emotional response to coastal views harkens back to our sense of ancient times. It is a line of analysis that has been expanded upon by Henry David Thoreau and others. In addition to our emotional pull toward the coastlines, we are also faced with the facts that wetlands and their flora and fauna—particularly bird nests and similar constructions—are crucial to containing (...)

    El Paraíso Perdido and Milton's Reception in Spain.Angelica Duran - 2012 - The European Legacy 17 (3):333 - 348.
After outlining some of the reasons for the delayed and uninspiring Hispanophone translations of Milton's works, this essay examines the ways in which El Paraíso Perdido, Juan de Escoiquiz's translation of 1812?the first and still most readily-available Spanish verse translation of Paradise Lost (1667)?Catholicizes Milton's Protestant epic. A comparative close reading of key anti-Catholic passages in Milton's original and Escoiquiz's translation demonstrates the translator's avowed practice of excising anything ?ridiculous or indecent to the rites and practices of the Catholic Church.?

    Feminist epistemology and social epistemics.Jane Duran - 2003 - Social Epistemology 17 (1):45 – 54.
Recent work in naturalised epistemology has focused almost exclusively on the intersection of cognitive psychology and theory of knowledge; work from sociolinguistics is just now beginning to gain ground. At the same time, feminist epistemologies have striven to articulate the precise paths of connectedness and relatedness that gynocentric theory standardly postulates as being characteristic of female ways of knowing. This paper attempts to articulate the intersection of sociolinguistically naturalised epistemology and feminist theory of knowledge. A model of gynocentrically centred justification (...)

Life and matter: Bergson and the classical Thermodynamics.

The work of MacKinnon, Pheterson and others is cited to examine what are commonly described as libertarian arguments for the decriminalization of sex work. Original Marxist lines of analysis are also examined, and it is concluded that the dangers of sex work outweigh the notion that there is no compelling state interest in suppressing it.

    Murdoch’s Morality.Jane Duran - 2018 - International Philosophical Quarterly 58 (4):361-370.
This paper argues that Murdoch’s views possess a structured ontology. As some of her critics note, her philosophical stance is one that must be gleaned from close readings of both her novels and her more straightforward essays. Given the complexities of her novels, the addition of her other work makes for a challenging task, but one that the reader can use. Murdoch’s work is valuable for the range of moral options it displays.

Philosophy and science: critique of Bergson’s use of Boltzmann’s argument against the reversibility of the universe.
